When constructing characters in fiction and memoir, often writers look to write someone cohesive and whole. But in order to survive the demands of labor under capitalism, often the self becomes divided or repressed. This broken character is much more difficult to write convincingly. Resonance with the popular television show Severance's "Innies" and "Outies" --- has put into spotlight this bifurcated self, but there are many other ways to address this clefting in prose.

This weekly generative writing course will analyze six books of prose and evaluate their syntax, structure, and other innovative methods. Students will be responsible for reading one book a week before class. Time will be given to write together in response to discussion, and the course will culminate in a showcase open to the community.

Dates 6-8pm Wednesday June 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th, and Wednesday July 2nd and 9th --- Showcase Saturday July 12th 6-8pm
